Starring in ‘Rogue Nation,’ ‘Fallout,’ and ‘Dead Reckoning Part One,’ Rebecca Ferguson portrayed Ilsa Faust, a character considered one of the best in the whole franchise. Fans praised her character for being a lethal, multifaceted, and independent spy who worked equally with Ethan Hunt.
However, she decided to abandon the spy universe after completing her three-picture deal for two main reasons. In an interview, Ferguson reflected on her experience portraying Ilsa, who debuted in 2015 with ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.’
She explained that the character’s exit was something she actively supported, since she preferred that Ilsa’s storyline end with a grand finale rather than slowly disappear from the screen. “She was so brilliantly written, and it was so well executed,” Ferguson said.
But as the franchise expanded, she felt there was only so much she could do with the character. It felt like Ilsa was slowly becoming a team player in Hunt’s group. Ultimately, Ferguson discussed her decision to leave with the director, Christopher McQuarrie, and the franchise’s star, Tom Cruise.
While her contract was for three movies, there was also an opportunity to renegotiate her further involvement in the project. And here’s what she did.

“My contract was a three-picture deal. So you can renegotiate to move on, or you can sit down and go, I’m not sure there is enough room,” she said. “It’s Ethan, it’s his story. And there’s a lot of other people in. You have incredible Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff.”

According to Ferguson, it seemed better to give her character a definitive ending. “I think a hard exit is a cooler ending than kind of lukewarmly diluting into a team,” she said. “She was always supposed to be unpredictable. She was always supposed to be an equal to Ethan.”
Besides a fading character arc, another factor was time commitment. The scale of the ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies required big-time investments, which often included sitting around for several months waiting for a scene to be shot.
Thus, she decided to quit to make time for other significant leading roles in the ‘Dune’ films and the TV series ‘Silo,’ which offer more consistent acting opportunities. Overall, the actress walked away from Ilsa Faust to save the very character.
In the movie, the character sacrifices herself to protect Grace from Gabriel during a sword fight on the Ponte Minich Bridge in Venice. Ultimately, Ferguson’s decision was about striking a difficult balance between maintaining a lucrative corporate job and preserving artistic integrity.
