The frightening mishap came during the production of ‘Braveheart,’ that Gibson both directed and starred in as Scottish hero William Wallace. While filming the 1995 historical drama, he demonstrated how the scene should look before something unexpectedly went wrong.
“The next thing I knew, I was waking up, I was on the floor.” When he regained consciousness, he found members of the crew gathered around him. Confused by the commotion, Gibson asked why everyone had stopped working.
Their answer quickly explained the situation. “They said, ‘Well, you hung yourself.'” The crew had rushed to free him after realizing the rope had tightened around his neck. Gibson said the entire experience happened so quickly that he never felt any pain. “It happens in an instant and you don’t know it,” he explained. “It wasn’t painful, nothing.”
