‘Dune: Part Two‘ delivered one of the franchise’s biggest jaw-dropping moments when it uncovered Lady Jessica’s true connection to Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. The reveal completely changed how fans looked at several key characters.
But it turns out that twist almost arrived a lot sooner. Rebecca Ferguson has revealed that Dune originally featured a deleted scene between Jessica and the Baron that hinted at a mysterious bond between them.
Rebecca Ferguson Shares Details About The Deleted Scene

Speaking on the ReelBlend Podcast, Rebecca Ferguson revealed that Dune originally included a scene between Lady Jessica and Baron Harkonnen after Jessica and Paul Atreides were captured. The sequence was meant to happen just before the pair were thrown onto the ornithopter.
Ferguson described Jessica lying on a huge carpet with her hands and legs bound while the camera looked down from above. Then, in a moment she called unforgettable, Baron Harkonnen slowly lowered himself onto her.
“There’s a scene – and I’ve seen the footage out there, but they cut the scene – in the first…film where, when our characters are kidnapped, right before we get thrown on the ornithopter…Paul and Jessica,” Ferguson recalled.
She went on to explain what happened next. “Then there’s a scene where Jessica is lying with her arms bound and her legs. And she’s lying on this huge open space, it’s a carpet. And you see it from a bird perspective, I think. In this tiny little fetal position, right?“
The actor said the Baron then rolled his body onto Jessica, making it impossible for her to breathe. “And you see that it is Vladimir Harkonnen. He’s pushing air out of her, so she can’t breathe. And literally her eyes are nearly popping, and he whispers something in her ear. And it was cut.”
The Reveal Made The ‘Dune’ Scene Feel Completely Different

Ferguson admitted she was disappointed the sequence never made it into the movie. Still, after ‘Dune: Part Two’ confirmed that Jessica is the Baron’s daughter, she understood why Villeneuve may have decided to leave it out.

“And my sadness is the fact that when you find out [Jessica is Baron Harkonnen’s daughter], it becomes a really odd dynamic, that scene, because it’s oddly sensual and sexual and weird,” she said.
She also believes the scene may have raised too many questions too soon. “It left us wondering what this relationship was, and I wonder if that’s why he cut it. Because it did link us.”
Even though she loved filming it, Ferguson acknowledged that deleted scenes are simply part of the filmmaking process. “That private moment really put us in a room by ourselves. That’s one of my favorite scenes, which I was sad about, but it always happens, right?“.
The deleted sequence would have hinted at a deeper connection between Jessica and Baron Harkonnen long before the sequel explained their true relationship. Fans may have started piecing together the mystery much earlier. That could have taken some of the impact away from ‘Dune: Part Two‘s biggest reveal.
Instead, Villeneuve saved the twist until Jessica became the Fremen Reverend Mother and discovered her Harkonnen heritage. That reveal also reshaped Paul’s journey.
After learning he shares Harkonnen blood, he fully embraces his role as the Lisan al-Gaib and leads the Fremen into battle. His final showdown with Baron Harkonnen carries even more emotional weight because he is confronting his own grandfather.
By leaving the deleted scene out of the first film, Dune avoided unnecessary confusion and preserved the most unforgettable surprise. Now, it is easy to see why Villeneuve made that call.
