The deaths of Rickard and Brandon Stark are among the darkest moments in ‘Game of Thrones‘ lore, not simply because they were executions, but because Aerys II Targaryen deliberately turned them into something much more horrifying.
The disturbing thing is that Rickard comes in with the idea that he may be able to be protected by the Westerosi concept of justice. Instead, the Mad King twists those rules into an instrument of torture.
Aerys Targaryen Proved He Was Truly Mad When He Turned Justice Into Torture

Brandon Stark’s mistake was to go to King’s Landing and demand that Rhaegar Targaryen take responsibility for the disappearance of Lyanna Stark. His anger was understandable, but confronting the crown so openly gave Aerys exactly what he needed. The Mad King had Brandon arrested and called Lord Rickard to King’s Landing.

Rickard insisted on a trial by combat, as he was willing to fight for his son’s life. It was a fair method to resolve the issue. Aerys accepted, but with one horrid change. He didn’t select a champion; he picked fire. Rickard was suspended on a burning pile, still in his armor. As the heat intensified, the metal around him became unbearably hot.
He was slowly burned to death while Aerys stood by. It’s hard to visualize the fear of that moment. Rickard wasn’t simply being killed. He was being made an example of. However, Aerys was not done. Brandon was bound with a leather cord around his neck and placed where he could see his father dying.
There was a sword just out of his reach. Brandon fought his way toward it, hoping that if he could get to it, he would be able to save himself somehow. Rather, each motion tightened the cord. He eventually choked to death.
That’s a detail that really makes the scene very brutal. Brandon wasn’t simply executed. Aerys created a scenario where Brandon’s own desperate fight to survive was the means of his demise.
The Mad King Crossed A Line Even Westeros Couldn’t Forgive

That’s why the deaths of Rickard and Brandon are significant to Westeros’ history. Aerys was already more paranoid and violent than ever, but there was still a political system backing him. The king’s treatment of the Starks showed that he no longer cared about justice, mercy, or even the appearance of it.

He was just using his power for his own ends. And that’s when it all came to a change. The murders also helped transform Robert Baratheon’s rebellion from a dispute involving Lyanna Stark into something much larger. Rickard and Brandon were not just members of one noble family.
Their deaths proved to the other great houses that they were not all secure from the king’s madness. That’s what makes this moment so tragic. The Targaryen dynasty didn’t merely lose the realm because Robert had a stronger army. Aerys himself helped destroy the legitimacy of his throne.
The Mad King had turned a trial by combat into a nightmare, and Westeros could no longer turn a blind eye to him. The revolt that ensued was not just a matter of who would rule the crown. It was a question of whether the man wearing it should be allowed to continue living.
