“Shingles Popped Out Of My Spine”: Elliot Page Recalls Experiencing A Mental Spiral While Filming ‘Inception’ Amidst Devastating Identity Crises

Elliot Page remembers his time working on ‘Inception’ for all the wrong reasons. Already suffering from crippling anxiety, working with such a testosterone-filled cast further damaged his sense of self. While he’s thankful to have worked with Christopher Nolan, the experience cost him his mental well-being.

The Canadian actor also opened up on the pressures of being gendered. Elliott Page was asked to wear a dress to the Paris premiere of ‘Inception,’ which mentally made the actor fall apart. The Canadian actor first came out as gay in 2014 and later a trans man in 2020.

Elliot Page’s struggle with sexuality worsened while working on Christopher Nolan’s 2011 film ‘Inception.’ In a cast of primarily cisgender men, the Canadian actor felt out of place and joked about being replaced by Keira Knightley. Being out of touch with who he was back then, Elliot Page‘s anxiety resulted in him having a panic attack at the Paris premiere of ‘Inception.’

In his memoir ‘Pageboy,’ the Canadian actor writes, “Shingles popped out of my spine while filming ‘Inception’ when I was 22. Despite everyone being delightful to work with, I felt out of place. In a cast full of cis men, I did not understand the role I found myself in. For the first two weeks of the film I joked I would be recast with Keira Knightley, and rightfully so.”

Elliot Page’s memoir has done a great job of providing insights into the many secret lives of the Canadian actor. He has opened up about his secret affairs with actresses Kate Mara and his ‘Juno’ co-star Olivia Thirlby. But the most astonishing story is about Hollywood’s treatment of LGBTQIA+ actors.

In his memoir, the Canadian actor revealed a famous male A-lister’s disgusting behavior during a party. He nonchalantly told Page that sexuality doesn’t exist, threatening to ‘f***’ him until he’s straight. The 36-year-old actor expressed his disappointment at the continued instances of such remarks the LGBTQIA+ actors face.
