According to actor Ke Huy Quan, one unforgettable moment on the set of ‘The Goonies‘ proved just how far Spielberg was willing to go to pull a prank on the ‘Star Wars‘ legend. Here’s what the filmmaker did.
Steven Spielberg Welcomed Harrison Ford With A Biography He Despised
Ke Huy Quan once revealed in an interview with The Guardian that one of his favorite memories from making the 1985 family adventure drama ‘The Goonies’ involved Spielberg. He spoke of the director’s elaborate prank on Harrison Ford when the actor stopped by the set.

“I was star-struck when Harrison Ford came to visit because I’d made Indy,” Quan recalled. Spielberg knew Ford from their ironic partnership for the ‘Indiana Jones’ franchise. And he also served as a writer and executive producer on ‘The Goonies.’
So, when Ford decided to pay a visit to Quan, who played his loyal sidekick in ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,’ Spielberg saw his chance. He explained that the prank revolved around a biography of Ford that the actor reportedly couldn’t stand.
Spielberg went all in and bought 300 copies of the book to distribute them across the production. The result was hilarious for Spielberg and an utter embarrassment for Ford.
“When Harrison came to visit and walked on to set, the security guard, the gaffers, the camera equipment people, everybody was reading that biography,” Quan revealed.

For children growing up in the 1980s, few names carried more excitement than Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg. But 13-year-old Ke Huy Quan got to experience their magic firsthand when he landed the role of Short Round, Dr. Jones’ fearless young sidekick, in ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.’

On top of that, when he was cast to work again with Spielberg in ‘The Goonies,’ Quan got the front-row seat to watch these two icons and their legendary friendship up close.
Quan never identified the biography that annoyed Ford so much, but it could be ‘The Harrison Ford Story’ by Alan McKenzie. Released in August 1984, the book was marketed as the first in-depth account of the actor’s career.
‘The Goonies’ production started later that year in October. This gave Spielberg plenty of time to collect hundreds of copies to pull the prank on Ford. Considering Ford’s well-known dislike of interviews and his private nature, it is evident that Spielberg knew the best way to pull his friend’s leg.
