Taylor Swift is an American singer-songwriter who has been in the music industry for close to 16 years now. Who hasn’t listened to the heart-sobbing but sweet ‘Love Story’ or the much groovy ‘Shake It Off’ or doesn’t know the much iconic lyrics ‘Darling, I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream’ from ‘Blank Space’? Taylor knows how to spin songs with the best strings of syllables.
Her 2014 song ‘Blank Space‘ from her fifth studio album ‘1989’ was another of her many hits, which spent seven weeks at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Taylor has talked in depth about how the conception of the song came to be and how, in reality, the song was born out as a joke. Here’s what happened.

The Inspiration Behind ‘Blank Space’: Taylor Swift Wrote The Song As A Joke
Taylor Swift revealed that the origin of her global success song, ‘Blank Space‘ was actually the constant media scrutiny she received for dating too many men. Talking to the People, she commented sarcastically, “From 2012 to 2013, they (media) thought I was dating too much because I dated two people in a year and a half, but whatever – we’ll leave it there.”
She also added, “Oh, a serial dater. She only writes songs to get emotional revenge on guys. She’s a man-hater. Don’t let her near your boyfriend.’ It was just kind of excessive and, you know, at first it was hurtful and then I kind of found a little comedy in it.”
During her appearance at Sirius XM in October 2014, the singer said that she started writing ‘Blank Space‘ as a joke. “You know what’s interesting about this song is that I started writing it as a joke. I was just kinda sitting around thinking about how the media has had a field day talking about what they think my personal life is like.”
She further talked about how the media has formed a certain image of the pop singer based on who and how many people she dates, “So I just kind of thought, ‘Alright, so they’ve drawn up this fictitious profile of this girl who is like a serial dater and she’s like over-emotional. She’s like unstable, like completely clingy, needy, like a nightmare.’ So I was thinking about it, and I just thought, ‘How incredibly complex and interesting that character actually is if we’re a real girl and what kind of song she would write.”
The song was an excellent self-satirical song, referring to the reputation the media and public have given her of a flirtatious and an ‘unstable’ woman who hates men.
