Why Did Taylor Swift Feel She Was ‘Shamed’ By The Media Into Staying Single?

For more than half of her life, Taylor Swift has drawn both praise and scorn. She has recently released the re-recordings of her third and fourth studio albums and magazines and artists have praised them for highlighting her songwriting talent, singing prowess, and storytelling expertise. Swift was once criticized for her every action, from writing about her personal experiences to wanting to own her music, and was considered an “immature” musician.

Why does the media and people detest her so? The turbulent connection that America has had with the artist has dominated tabloid covers and news cycles for the better part of the last ten years.

Because she dates celebrities and then records songs about them, Taylor Swift receives a lot of incredibly undeserved criticism. But without Taylor’s candor and transparency on her love life and ex-boyfriends, we wouldn’t have some of her best poetic compositions. Despite barely ever dating, Joe and Taylor’s split was the most dramatic ever, most likely because he abruptly ended things on a phone call. While filming ‘Valentine’s Day’, Taylor and Taylor Lautner had a relationship and filmed some memorable scenes together. Only dating for a few months, Taylor and John Mayer’s breakup was a complete disaster due to John’s awful response to Taylor’s ‘Dear John’ song about him. She then went on to date actor Jake Gyllenhaal and singer Harry Styles who became two of her most talked about love affairs.

Swift’s love life was all over the headlines when she started dating DJ Calvin Harris in 2015 and when they broke things off in 2016, Harris reportedly accused her of cheating on him in some of his song lyrics. The same year, she met and dated actor Tom Hiddleston but unfortunately, things didn’t last long as the two broke up after dating for just four short months. Finally, she began dating actor Joe Alwyn in 2017 and the two managed to keep their relationship private for almost a year before British tabloid The Sun broke the news. The duo has since been together and occasionally made headlines when Taylor revealed that she wrote songs with Alwyn who used the pen name, William Bowery, for her eighth and ninth studio albums ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’, respectively.

The ‘Shake It Off’ singer said this during a Glamour UK interview, claiming it’s unfair to label her as “boy crazy” and “clingy.” It is a known fact that Swift experienced severe double standards for the majority of her career. Swift was criticized for being overly emotional for doing the same thing while the artists around her, such as Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, and others, were commended for producing songs based on their own experiences. She went on to tell the magazine, “I do feel jaded about relationships, to be honest. “I think the media has sent me an unfair message over the past couple of years, which is that I’m not allowed to date for excitement, or fun, or new experiences, or learning lessons. I’m only allowed to date if it’s for a lasting, multiple-year relationship. Otherwise, I’m a, quote, serial dater. Or, quote, boy crazy.”

Swift said “the narrative has been so wrong,” chronicling false origin stories for her romances that claim she’s “chasing” a guy and then result in “the same fabricated ending” claiming “she got too clingy” or “has too many emotions, she scared him away.” In an attempt to get back at the media for these false labels, she wrote and sang the satirical ‘Blank Space’ and followed it up with a music video featuring Sean O’Pry. The song was released as a single and went on to the top charts and became one of her most streamed songs of the time. Thankfully, we hear this story less and less in the present era. Taylor Swift and other upcoming female pop singers are now treated with considerably more tolerance in society as a result of her being named artist and woman of the decade by Billboard. She didn’t do anything wrong in the end, so there’s nothing to forgive in the first place, but that fact still stands.
