Taylor Swift Managed To Shake The Ground During Her Los Angeles Leg Of Eras Tour
Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert in Los Angeles last year had more impact than her fans could have imagined. A study by researchers at Caltech and UCLA has claimed that the sheer enthusiasm of the 70,000-strong crowd at SoFi Stadium in August 2023 created seismic activity in Los Angeles.
Dubbed the “Swift quake,” this phenomenon is not something that Swift achieved for the first time. Swift’s concerts seem to have a knack for moving the earth. A similar seismic event was recorded during her tour in Seattle’s Lumen Field in July 2023. This quake was registered “equivalent of a 2.3 magnitude earthquake.”
The findings of the study claiming that Los Angeles also experienced a “Swift Quake” were detailed in a report titled ‘Shake to the Beat: Exploring the Seismic Signals and Stadium Response of Concerts and Music Fans’. Published on Wednesday, the report claims that it wasn’t the booming bass or thunderous drums that caused the tremors — it was the movements of the audience, that resulted in what researchers described as “distinct harmonic tremors.”

Here’s How The Researchers Collected Data For Their Findings
For this report to be made, the data was gathered with the help of motion sensors that were strategically placed just over five-and-a-half miles from SoFi Stadium. They allowed the researchers to analyze spectrograms and track wave length frequencies.
The report also noted that hit songs like ‘Shake It Off‘ and ‘Love Story‘ were among the songs that produced the largest seismic activity. Apart from Swift’s concerts, the study also compared the seismic impact of performances by other megastars like Beyoncé, Metallica, and Morgan Wallen at the same venue.
Swift’s Eras Tour has been nothing short of a phenomenon, as it shattered attendance records and went on to become the highest-grossing music tour of all time.
After doing some shows in North America, Swift took her show overseas to Japan, Australia, and Singapore in 2024. She has further plans to tour Europe soon. The upcoming release of her 11th studio album, ‘The Tortured Poets Department‘ is set for April 19, and will coincide with the continuation of her tour in late May, including dates across Europe and the U.K.
Fans who missed out on the live experience can watch Swift’s concert film directed by Sam Welch, now streaming on Disney+.
