The entertainment industry is full of horror stories, particularly about the treatment of starlets. Millions of doe-eyed young women walk into the audition halls, dreaming of stardom every year. But they are never considered as equals on a set. Claire Foy of ‘The Crown’ shared an experience from her early days during a podcast appearance.
Before her rise to fame, Claire Foy was a struggling artist vying for decent roles. While working on the pilot of BBC’s ‘Being Human,’ she received harsh treatment from the director. The unnamed director showed no consideration for the young actor, making her life on set a living hell.

Before ‘The Crown,’ Claire Foy saw some rough days as an up and comer. While appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Emmy-winner talked about the “unkind” behavior of the director of BBC’s ‘Being Human’ pilot. She further told the host, Josh Horowitz, about the worst note she ever got, which was to “start acting, darling” as soon as the cameras started rolling. It left her stunned, to say the least.
In retrospect, Claire Foy has come to terms with the fact she was treated with disrespect. She talked at length about her realization, saying, “It’s taken me a long time to accept that it was actually a very unkind thing to do to a 23-year-old on their first job ever. Instead of taking them under your wing and helping them, just shouting at them in front of everyone … Sometimes not very nice directors need someone to bully on set and I was like that person.”
