“Did It For My Own Sanity”: Claire Foy Says She Has No Regrets Exiting ‘The Crown’

Claire Foy, who originally played the role of Queen Elizabeth in Netflix’s ‘The Crown‘ said she has no regrets about leaving the show after its second season. As the show is set to air its sixth and final season, Foy shared her reasons for leaving the show and why it is not something she hopes she still retained.

I’ve got a lot of love for the people who are still doing the show, but for my own sanity, I ended the show when I ended it,” the actress told People at the Los Angeles premiere of All of Us Strangers on Wednesday. “I let it go and moved on and I think that’s quite healthy,” she said.

Foy Says She Does Not Want To Defined By The Role Of Queen Elizabeth

After Foy left the show, ‘The Crown‘ rotated the role of the queen through a new actress in every season. After Foy, Olivia Colman took on the role of Queen Elizabeth, while Imelda Staunton is set to conclude the series as the queen.

Foy had reiterated the same statement once before when she spoke about leaving the role. She asserted that she was not afraid to step away from the role, primarily because she did not want it to define her.

I don’t feel like I’m defined by playing Queen Elizabeth,” she had said. “It’s a huge honor that people liked that character and therefore see me as that character. So, I’m not trying to actively go against that,” she added.

She added that she was “really, really proud” of the time she has spent with the show, even as she announced that she is keenly looking forward to what’s coming for her next.

My career is only for me, really…I can’t do it for anybody else and so the choices and decisions I make are purely based on what I want to do. That’s it really. It’s a really selfish thing,” she said.

As The Crown‘ approaches its last season, the showmakers have showered praises on the show’s entire team including Foy, Colman, and Staunton as perfect leaders. The series’ historical consultant, Robert Lacey said Foy perfectly captured the young version of Queen Elizabeth.

They were very glamorous years. The Queen was the most glamorous figure in the world, and Claire Foy captured that well,” Lacey said.  “She also conveyed her fragility and her uncertainty and how she grew into the role,” he added.

Meanwhile, while looking forward to the portrayal by Imelda Staunton, Lacey said that she brings grace and softness to the Queen’s later, tumultuous years.

She captured the twinkle amid the dowdiness. She brought great softness to the stern side of the Queen,” Lacey said. “Those were the years of the family issues threatening to derail the family institution. You could say she kept it on the rails.”

The final part of The Crown Season 6 will be released on Netflix on December 14.
