But before Radcliffe stepped into the world of Hogwarts, one decision from his parents almost cost him the major role. It took an incredible twist of fate to get the actor to join the movie adaptation of J.K. Rowling‘s best-selling novel of the same name.
Daniel Radcliffe’s Parents Didn’t Want Him To Join ‘Harry Potter’
Daniel Radcliffe made his acting debut at the age of ten in BBC One’s two-part adaptation of ‘David Copperfield’ in 1999. Chris Columbus, who directed the first two ‘Harry Potter’ movies, happened to watch the series and immediately knew he had found the lead actor.

“This is Harry Potter.” Columbus once famously said, “This is the kid we’ve been looking for months.” But the excitement died down soon when Radcliffe’s parents, Alan and Marcia, straight-up rejected the offer.
There was one very important reason behind the decision, which Radcliffe later explained. “They went to my parents, and, at the time, the deal was to sign on for—I think—six films, all to be done in L.A., and my mum and dad said, ‘That’s too much disruption to his life. That’s not gonna happen.'”
For 11-year-old Daniel Radcliffe, moving his entire life to Los Angeles and committing himself to years of filmmaking understandably concerned his parents. At the time, they rejected the offer, deciding that it wasn’t the right path for him.
A Chance Encounter Changed Everything For The Franchise
Fortunately, the story didn’t end there, as fate had other plans. Later that year, ‘Harry Potter’ producer David Heyman and screenwriter Steve Kloves attended a play in London. By pure coincidence, Daniel Radcliffe sat right behind them.

Heyman knew in that moment why Radcliffe needed to join the movie. “I paid very little attention to the play.” He stated, “I was always looking over my shoulder at the boy behind, and he just had this quality of an old soul in a young body.”
He eventually persuaded Radcliffe’s parents to reconsider, while Warner Bros. also revised the original plan. Instead of a long-term commitment in Los Angeles, the studio offered a two-film contract and shooting to take place in the United Kingdom.
This finally led them to change their mind. “They took it as a sign that it was somehow meant to be,” Radcliffe later said. Soon, young Radcliffe was brought in for a screen test and director Chris Columbus knew they had found their Harry.
“There was one thing that Dan had that you couldn’t teach anyone, which was the sort of haunted quality. I just saw it in his eyes in more serious moments.”
The final piece of good news came when Daniel Radcliffe’s father walked in one day to tell him he had won the role. “I cried,” Radcliffe recalled. And thus began the journey that would turn him into one of the most recognizable faces in cinema.
