With the ‘Avatar‘ franchise, James Cameron has been riding high on success for more than a decade. He did, after all, direct the 2009 movie ‘Avatar,’ which broke box office records and made us all a little bit obsessed with blue humanoid aliens. In 2022, Cameron once again proved that lightning can strike twice, especially when you’re in control, with ‘Avatar: The Way of Water.’
‘Avatar 3: Fire And Ash’ is now in development and is scheduled for release in December 2025. However, fans have one big issue on their minds: Will Cameron continue to direct the next sequels, or will he hand the reins to someone else?
James Cameron Confirms He’s Sticking Around With ‘Avatar’ Franchise
In a recent interview with THR, James Cameron was asked point-blank if he intended to direct ‘Avatar 4 and 5‘ himself. And let’s just say, he didn’t leave much room for doubt. “Sure. Absolutely,” Cameron responded with the kind of confidence you’d expect from someone who’s been in the game this long. He didn’t stop there, though.
“I mean, they’re gonna have to stop me. I got plenty of energy, love doing what I’m doing. Why would I not? And they’re written, by the way. I just reread both of them about a month ago. They’re cracking stories. They’ve got to get made. Look, if I get hit by a bus and I’m in an iron lung, somebody else is going to do it,” he said.

James Caron’s Vision Is Here To Stay
It’s worth noting that James Cameron’s commitment to the ‘Avatar‘ series isn’t just about finishing what he started. This franchise is a deeply personal project for him, a labor of love that goes beyond the usual director’s duties.
From pioneering new technologies to creating a fully realized world that feels almost tangible. Cameron has poured his heart and soul into every frame.
And while there had been some speculation that he might eventually hand over the reins, it seems like that idea is off the table. Cameron himself once said, “I think eventually over time—I don’t know if that’s after three or after four—I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know.”
‘Avatar 4 & 5′ will be released in 2029 and 2031 respectively.
