Tom Cruise is renowned for his high-octane action blockbusters. But the actor is now seemingly looking to chart a new course in his career. Though he is considered one of the industry’s biggest names, Tom Cruise is yet to secure an Academy Award. An Oscar is like the trademark for quality in Hollywood – and Tom Cruise has everything a successful actor has, except an Oscar trophy.
While it has so far seemed like Cruise does not care so much about an Academy Award as he does about doing some good action films, the actor is now showing an inclination towards the award. An insider has recently revealed that Cruise is now aiming to focus on auteur-driven films, hoping to clinch an Oscar.
Tom Cruise’s Deal With Warner Bros. Overshadows The Possibility Of ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Sequel
Film critic and industry insider Jeff Sneider recently revealed that super star Tom Cruise has signed a deal with Warner Bros. in an aspiration to test the waters he has not sailed before. Sneider was speaking on the ‘Hot Mic’ podcast, when he dispelled expectations of an ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ sequel with Cruise as the lead. According to Sneider, Cruise is not pursuing familiar territories anymore.
“When the Cruise deal was announced, everyone was like, ‘Oh! He’s gonna do Edge of Tomorrow!’ like that’s not what he is going up to f**king Warner Bros for – He’s looking to tell original stories, stories that are meant to be seen on big screen,” Sneider said.
Cruise’s partnership with Warner Bros which will span films through 2024, has put the idea of an ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ at the backseat. While fans initially speculated another installment of the film, some recent reports suggested that Cruise may not be up for it as he now desires change. The actor has earned immense popularity and wealth over his career, but is now setting his sights on the prestigious Academy Award.
In another development, Cruise recently collaborated with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, an Oscar winner himself. Iñárritu will head a film with Cruise, and in the process would return to English-language cinema. The last movie he directed for Hollywood was ‘The Revenant’ in 2015. While further details about the project are under wraps, sources are sure that this is Cruise’s deliberate shift towards auteur-driven narratives.

Tom Cruise Has Not Received An Oscar Nomination In Two Decades, Now He Aims For An Award
Over his dazzling career as a global superstar, Tom Cruise has become the face of the billion-dollar franchises like ‘Mission: Impossible’ and ‘Top Gun’. The Warner Bros. deal that he signed is like nothing he has ventured into before, and could therefore be a challenging step for him. Besides, it would also be important to factor in the audience response to Tom’s changed avatar, as people have only seen him in a certain kind of role.
However, the step has opened up many avenues for Cruise to explore various genres and break away from his action-hero mold. The actor already has a brand value, which makes it easier for him to collaborate with visionary directors, and get a platform for experimentation.
Tom Cruise had received nominations for the Oscars for Best Actor twice, but that was over two decades ago. The actor never won an Oscar, neither caught the Academy’s eye for the past two decades despite being a successful name in the industry.
His partnership with Warner Bros is a strategic move that would enhance Cruise’s chances of securing the coveted Oscar and would also elevate auteur directors to present the actor in a never-before-seen form. While his fans would be excited to see him in a different backdrop, the actor would also have to brace for some nuanced scrutiny as he shifts gears and aims for Hollywood’s top honor.
