“Al Weird”, originally named Alfred Matthew Yankovic was born in Downey, California, on October 23, 1959. He was the only child of Mary Elizabeth and Nick Yankovic. It was a salesman who offered to teach Yankovic either guitar or accordion. His parents chose the accordion over the guitar. Studying the musical instrument sparked the ‘White & Nerdy’ singer’s interest in music. He learned accordion at the local music school for three after which he decided to learn alone.
Yankovic was a big fan of Elton John who inspired him to take up rock & roll music on his accordion. He was influenced by artists like Stan Freberg, Spike Jones, Tom Lehrer, Allan Sherman, Shel Silverstein, and Frank Zappa in creating comedy and parody music. The singer had his first exposure through ‘The Dr. Demento Radio Show‘ in 1976. While in college, he sang songs at radio shows and coffee shops.
