This week ELLE Magazine honored the ‘Women In Hollywood’. They recognized the contribution of the actresses and honored them. The recipients of this honor were Olivia Wilde, Ariana DeBose, and Sydney Sweeney, along with ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ actress Anne Hathaway. During her moving speech, she recalled the internet hate she got in 2013 and the times when #Hathahate was making rounds.

The early years of the last decade were flourishing for the actress professionally, but Anne got a lot of hate for no reason at all! A gossip outlet released an article titled ‘Why Does Everyone Hate Anne Hathaway?’ In the article, they cited reasons why people hate the actress despite being an acting tour de force. The first reason was that she comes across as the nerdy theater kid who adapts to every situation. The writer interviewed young, mediocre folks who have to have opinions on things. One of them said, “She is the epitome of the annoying high school drama dork. An air of self-importance masking all that boring.”

Another problem was with her on and off-screen persona. According to the internet, Hathaway was lovely as a performer in all the films be it the Meryl Streep starrer or her underrated performance in the LGBTQIA+ western drama ‘Brokeback Mountain’. However, she sucked at the interviews, because of her ‘good nature’ which comes across as if she is trying too hard. In many instances, people found her “annoying”, especially at the awards show.

Anne Was Criticized For Bizarre Reasons

During the 2011 Academy Awards, James Franco and Anne Hathaway had the host duties. Franco was criticized for his “low-energy and bizarre performance”, but he dragged Anne, blaming her for her high-octane and brilliant performance. So convenient of James! People even had problems with her gratitude for the accolades and her long-winded, rehearsed speech. We guess that kindness and gratefulness come with a cost in the glamour industry. However, she graciously took all the hate in her stride. She credited women in the industry who supported her and accused men of creating a certain image of a woman.

During her acceptance speech at the ELLE event, Anne introspected the hate she received in 2013. She said, “Ten years ago, I was given an opportunity to look at the language of hatred from a new perspective. For context, this was a language I had employed myself since I was 7. And when your self-inflicted pain is suddenly somehow amplified back at you at, say, the full volume of the internet… It’s a thing.”

However, the unnecessary hate that she received did not bog her down and instead, made her retrospect the whole situation. Anne said, “When it happened to me, I realized that this wasn’t it. This wasn’t the spot. When what happened, happened, I realized I had no desire to have anything to do with this line of energy.”

She continued, “On any level. I would no longer create art from this place. I would no longer hold space for it, live in fear of it, nor speak its language for any reason. To anyone. Including myself.” The actress gave a befitting answer to the haters.

“Because there is a difference between existence and behavior. You can judge behavior. You can forgive behavior or not. But you do not have the right to judge—and especially not hate—someone for existing. And if you do, you’re not where it’s at,” she concluded.
