Which ‘South Park’ Episode Mocked Kanye West?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle weren’t the first celebrities to get mocked on ‘South Park.’ The show has made its bones by making fun of everyone. If anything, celebrities consider being made fun of on ‘South Park‘ as a badge of honor. That is unless you are open to embracing the joke. Kanye West clearly, missed the gag back in 2009.

When he was only an egoistic artiste and not a political menace, ‘South Park‘ took a shot at Kanye West. In the episode ‘Fish Sticks,’ the satire champions looked at an artist’s inability to take a joke. And that artist happened to be, to no one’s surprise, Kanye West. The ‘Satuday Night Live‘ star Bill Hader came up with the joke.

With the gang upset with him, Eric visits Jimmy, who’s writing jokes for an upcoming show. Cartman attaches himself to Jimmy. But instead of helping him with jokes, he sits on his couch and eats chips. Refusing to eat any fruit served, Cartman asks if there’s any food in the house. Jimmy suggests checking out the freezer for some fish sticks.

As Jimmy says it, there’s a Eureka moment. With some wordplay and spoken rapidly, fish sticks sounds hilarious. It’s an intelligent joke with a simple setup and a great sense of literary illusion. As the entire nation becomes obsessed with the fish sticks joke, Cartman gives himself credit for the joke. Jimmy, meanwhile, is just happy that it caught on. The joke becomes a sensation but rubs Kanye West the wrong way.

Cartman and Jimmy appear on Ellen, which is how Kanye learns of them. As Jimmy berates Cartman for taking credit without doing any work, West and the entourage enter to beat them up. As Cartman talks about artistic ego, Kanye learns a thing or two. Except he misunderstands everything, choosing to live underwater and kiss as many fish as possible.

Bill Hader Came Up With the Fish Sticks Joke

Bill Hader came up with ‘Fish Sticks’ joke about Kanye West

The ‘Saturday Night Live‘ alum Bill Hader created the Fish Sticks joke. During the 2014 New York Comedy Festival, he talked about the origins of the joke. Once on a retreat with South Park writers, he attended a strange salmon exhibit. As this group of comedy writers got to riff raff, Bill Hader created the joke resulting from hilarious confusion surrounding the words fish sticks.

The episode makes Kanye West the north star for “serious” artists not being able to take a moment for themselves to sit back and relax. Despite the obvious setup, West is unable to understand the joke. His increasing desperation with not dealing with what he thinks is a joke provides the most delirious laughs.

A self-certified genius, he takes the joke as a dig at his sexuality, which he vehemently denies. He even breaks down the anatomy of the joke, but to no avail. The more he says it, the less he understands. ‘South Park‘ successfully brings to life an inflated ego so bad it gives an insight into how awful a “genius” might be. The episode gets a lot about this person right.
