Born October 13, 1939, in Hope, Arkansas, Melinda Dillion was raised in Cullman, Alabama. Her career started as an improvisational comic and stage actress. In 1962, her first main role was in Edward Albee’s broadway Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf for which she received a Tony award nomination.
Her first feature film role came in the year 1969 with ‘The April Fools.’ Later, she played Woody Guthrie’s first wife, Mary in the biopic drama ‘Bound for Glory’ for which she got a Golden Globe nomination.
The next year she earned an Oscar nomination for her role in Steven Spielberg’s ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind.’ Later on in her career, Dillion appeared in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1999 film ‘Magnolia’, as the wife of a philandering quiz show host.

Dillion passed away at the age of 83 on January 9. 2023 in Los Angeles, California. No cause of death has been disclosed. However, it is possible that she died because of age-related illnesses.
On the personal front, Dillion was married to actor Richard Libertini with whom she shared a son. However, they parted ways and divorced in 1978. When it comes to religious beliefs, Dillion was a methodist.
