In the glittering world of Hollywood romance, few couples shone as brightly as Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley in the 1990s. However, behind the glamorous facade, cracks began to form, leading to the eventual end of their relationship in 2000.
Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley’s love story faced its first major test in 1995. This was after Grant’s arrest for soliciting the services of a sex worker sent shockwaves through the media.

The Bizarre Reason Behind Hugh Grant’s Infidelity
While talking to the WTF podcast, Hugh Grant opened up about the circumstances that led to him cheating on Elizabeth. He said, “I was about to launch my first Hollywood film. My timing was impeccable. My problem was that it was my first Hollywood film and I’d just been to see it.”
He explained that because of the film not being up to the mark, he got very drunk and paid 60$ to a sex worker. “The film was about to come out a week or two after that, and I had a bad feeling about it. I went to see a screening. Everyone in it was brilliant, but I was so atrocious that I was not in a good frame of mind,” he added.
However, this didn’t end well for Hugh who was caught in the act by a police officer. Grant was sentenced to pay a fine of $1,000 and ordered to attend an AIDS education program. The news had made headlines everywhere.

When Did Hugh Grant And Elizabeth Hurley Break Up?
Despite the infidelity news coming out in 1995, it was not until 5 years later in 2000 that the couple officially broke up. However, while the reason behind their breaking up is not clear, the two to date remain best of friends and always speak highly of each other.
While at the ‘Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen’ in March 2015, Hurley talked about her relationship with Hugh. She said, “He remains my best friend to this day, but. He really used to annoy me. I love him, but he’s very annoying.”
Even Hugh himself called Elizabeth his sister. “We’re like brother and sister,” Grant said about their relationship on The Jess Cagle interview in 2018. He further explained the reason behind them still being so close: “I think it’s partly because we went from zero to somewhere together, and we went through terrible years at the beginning when neither of us had any work, living in a tiny flat. It was quite bonding.”
