In March 2022, Lizzo, along with Fabletics, Inc., launched YITTY, a shapewear brand. The idea sprung from the fact that there was a lack of comfortable shapewear when she was a child. Also, there was not enough variety in colors so that every skin tone can wear a shapewear of the color that suits them.

She said in an interview that at YITTY, “we are designing collections in bold colors and prints that are meant to be exposed, styles that are technically designed to be worn as your underlayer but cute enough to wear alone.”

After one year, the singer launched YITTY’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection which focuses on introducing denim in shapewear and creating designs for all sizes and shapes. During an interview for ELLE UK, she talked about why she started the brand.

Lizzo said, “I’ve been wearing shapewear – tight pinching corsets and underwear bottoms – for a very long time; since I was in fifth or sixth grade. It was really painful and I really felt that it shouldn’t be this way; we shouldn’t be ashamed of our bodies and we shouldn’t have to wear these contraptions to feel beautiful. Plus, I could never find anything in my size and the colors were limited to pink, white, and black.”

She wanted a shapewear that could shape and hug her at the same time. The singer continued, “Eventually, I started to create my own shapewear pieces based on where I felt I needed to be shaped or hugged. But over time, because literally no one was addressing this, I realised that I needed to do it. I would drive the change. With YITTY, I have introduced shapewear that fits everybody – from 6X to XS – and makes me feel good about myself. It is not about changing my body.”

She continued,“And this was at a time when positive music and feel-good music wasn’t mainstream at that point, and I felt very misunderstood. I felt on the outside looking in.” The singer was proud to see positive music about appreciating one’s body and “feeling comfortable in our skin” is getting amplified.
