Why Did Marvel Fire Its President In Charge of VFX and Animation?

Marvel movies are known for their sensational animation and insane graphics. The visual effect of Thanos’s snap and the battle at the Avengers compound really sent shivers down the spine. It is safe to agree that, without VFX Marvel Cinematic Universe is just a film about six avengers jumping around in spandex trying to save the world. We also get to see an ancient god-like alien, a talking raccoon, an insect army, a humanoid tree, and a wizard who can travel through time.

Moreover, Marvel films like ‘Spiderman: No Way Home’, ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings’, and ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ were nominated for an Academy Award under the category of Best Visual effects. But lately, Victoria Alonso made the headlines for her sudden departure from MCU’s graphics team.

Victoria Alonso is a long-time president in charge of VFX and Animation who suddenly departed from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel’s sudden decision to fire Alonso raised many questions and created havoc in the studio. Just eight days after the Oscars, she was fired as the president in charge of VFX and Animation. According to many sources, Alonso’s termination was unclear and the decision also included the involvement of human resources.

Marvel’s visual effect has been in question for quite some time now, especially with its recent release ‘Antman and The Wasp: Quantumania’ which received backlash from the fans for its poor execution. The President of the VFX and Amination department was shocked was said that she did not expect this and was blindsided by the decision.

The Problem With MCU’s Amination And VFX

In 2022 several VFX artists talked about short deadlines and rigorous nitpicking as a major fear of being blacklisted. With Marvel making a debut on OOT and series, the pressure on the VFX artist has become twofold to maintain the quality. Marvel has maintained a smooth show with the continuous release of movies and series, but unfortunately, behind the scene, Marvel is facing numerous issues which led to the firing of the president of VFX and Animations.

Although credits to the designers for creating spine-chilling scenes, glamourous and tech-equipped costumes. But the glamour remains only on-screen, behind the scenes the VFX artists are sadly glued to their screens and are constantly under pressure to deliver the best of their content. Many artists shared their hatred towards the work offered by MCU studios. A six-year veteran of Marvel’s VFX industry said  “the one Marvel project they were a part of was, Absolutely the worst show I’ve ever worked on…. I didn’t know how much worse it could get until that project came along.”
