Turning down a ‘Harry Potter‘ movie sounds almost impossible today, especially considering how successful the franchise became. Yet, Steven Spielberg once found himself in exactly that position.
Before the first film reached theaters, the Oscar-winning director was actually lined up to bring J.K. Rowling’s magical world to the big screen. But Spielberg walked away from the project before cameras ever started rolling.
Steven Spielberg Was Meant To Bring ‘Harry Potter’ To The Big Screen

Before Chris Columbus stepped behind the camera for ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone‘, Spielberg was the filmmaker lined up to direct the movie. The franchise had all the ingredients for massive success, and the books had already become a cultural phenomenon worldwide.
Naturally, many people assumed Spielberg would take on the project. After all, he had built a career creating unforgettable stories for young audiences through films such as ‘E.T.‘ and ‘Jurassic Park‘. A magical adventure like Harry Potter seemed like a perfect fit. However, while the wizarding world offered an exciting future, another project carried a much more personal meaning for the director.
The turning point came after the death of filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, whom Spielberg greatly admired. At Kubrick’s funeral, his wife, Christiane Kubrick, and her brother, Jan Harlan, approached Spielberg with a request that would change his plans.
Looking back on that moment, Spielberg recalled, “After his death, I was at the funeral at his home. Christiane [Kubrick] and Jan Harlan, her brother, approached me about taking over from Stanley, as Stanley had intended, and directing the movie.”
Why Spielberg Never Reconsidered His Decision

The film they were talking about was ‘A.I. Artificial Intelligence‘. Kubrick had spent years developing the project, but never got the chance to complete it. Spielberg felt a responsibility to finish the story the way his friend had envisioned it.

The commitment eventually led him to make a difficult choice. As Spielberg explained, “I actually walked away from Harry Potter, which I was scheduled to direct as my next movie.”
Spielberg knew exactly what he was giving up. By that point, Harry Potter had already captured the imagination of millions of readers, and there was every reason to believe the film would become a worldwide hit.
Even so, commercial success was not the deciding factor. Completing ‘A.I. Artificial Intelligence‘ meant honoring Kubrick’s final wish, and that mattered more to Spielberg than being part of a franchise that was destined to dominate popular culture.
Reflecting on the decision years later, he simply said, “I gave that up to essentially do AI.” Interestingly, both films arrived in theaters in 2001. One launched one of the biggest franchises in movie history, while the other allowed Spielberg to fulfill a promise to a filmmaker he deeply respected.
Ultimately, for Spielberg, the choice was never really about ‘Harry Potter‘. It was about friendship, respect, and finishing a story that someone he admired could no longer tell himself.
