It was supposed to be a perfect ending. A tender family drama that would give Henry Fonda one last great role and let his daughter Jane make peace with him on screen. Instead, the set of ‘On Golden Pond‘ turned into one of Hollywood’s most interesting behind-the-scenes fights. It was a clash of generations, fueled by competition and old grudges.

When Jane Fonda bought the movie rights to Ernest Thompson‘s play for her father, she probably did not expect to end up in a feud with her famous co-star, Katharine Hepburn. But things got tense right from the start. “The first time I met her, you know what the first words she said to me were? ‘I don’t like you!‘” Fonda later said.

According to Fonda, the problem was professional jealousy. At that time, Hepburn had three Academy Awards. Fonda had two, and she was at the peak of her career, making money at the box office and producing the film. Hepburn, who always cared about her legacy, saw Fonda as a real threat. “She really thought that I was out to win more Academy Awards than she was,” Fonda told Harper’s Bazaar. It was not just paranoia. It was a cold war over Oscar statues.

The fight reached its high point in 1982. Both women were nominated for their work in ‘On Golden Pond‘. Hepburn won her record-breaking fourth Oscar for Best Actress, and Fonda lost for Best Supporting Actress. Showing class, Fonda called her co-star to say congratulations. Hepburn’s reply was famously sharp. She reportedly said, “You’ll never catch me now“. It was a harsh comment that showed the competitive fear that defined their relationship; a legendary actress worried that a younger one was catching up to her.

Hidden Respect Between Two Hollywood Icons

The bitter feelings went beyond Oscar counts. Hepburn, who came from Hollywood’s Golden Age, reportedly did not respect Fonda’s style or her activism. Fonda remembered Hepburn telling her, “You never could’ve made it back then,” and added that Hepburn thought she “wasn’t glamorous enough“. Hepburn also shared a harsh opinion with writer Dominick Dunne, saying simply: “Jane Fonda has no soul“.

But the relationship was not all bad. It was surprisingly complicated. Fonda admitted that while Hepburn could be “prickly” and “competitive,” she also took her job as an older, respected actress seriously. Hepburn reportedly hid in the bushes to watch Fonda practice a difficult backflip for the movie. In the end, she praised Fonda for being brave, and that earned Fonda’s respect.

The rivalry was mostly coming from one side. While Hepburn worried about records and her place in history, Fonda was focused on her own path. She even called the experience “wonderful” because of what she learned professionally. But the sharp comments, especially the Olympic remark, show a real truth about Hollywood. For icons like Hepburn, the fear of being passed by was often stronger than anything they did on screen.
