Recently, DCEU has struggled to place a foothold in the box office. All the films released in 2023 have little to no connection with each other and failed to impress the fans with their poor VFX and bland storyline. Even the much-anticipated ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom‘ starring Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, and Patrick Wilson, reached $400 million at the box office on its sixth weekend in theaters.
When compared to previous DC films, ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ falls much behind. However, China became the savior of the film.

‘Aquaman Man And The Lost Kingdom’ Sets A Record In China
While all of America failed ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’, China saved the movie from a plunging box office. According to the reports by Deadline, the film struggled to even reach $400 million because of its poor performance at the American box office. However, since the film’s release in China, it made a significant impact at the global box office earning up to $61.7 million with the support from the fans.
Box Office Mojo reported that ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ not only crossed a huge record, but also surpassed the Oscar-winning ‘Oppenheimer‘, starring Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, and Cillian Murphy. While Christopher Nolan’s film earned around $61.6 million, ‘Aquaman 2‘ beat ‘Oppenheimer’, setting a rare record.

‘Aquaman 2’ Is 7th Highest-Grossing DCEU Movie Worldwide
Unlike ‘Aquaman’, its sequel failed to capture a new audience and retain its existing fans. ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ stands at the bottom of the most successful of the DCEU’s 2023 installments. Despite its disappointing performance, the film is the 7th highest-grossing DCEU film worldwide and the 9th highest-grossing film domestically.
With James Gunn taking over the franchise, there is no clear confirmation whether Jason Momoa will reprise his role as Aquaman in future projects. Peter Safran revealed that Jason Momoa would not return to pick up the trident in DC’s future projects, marking ‘Aquaman 2‘ as Momoa’s last appearance as Aquaman.
