DC Studios is investing heavily in animation, announcing three brand new shows based on some of its most beloved characters.
The recently announced projects, ‘Absolute Batman’, ‘Joker: Laugh Riot’, and ‘Krypto,’ demonstrate the studio’s ambition to venture into entirely different parts of the DC universe, from the dark crime genre to family-friendly adventures.
DC Is Doubling Down On Animation

The announcement included new logos and story details for all three shows. It provided fans with their first glimpse of what’s set to be an ambitious expansion of DC’s animated lineup. One of the most significant is ‘Absolute Batman’, based on the popular comic by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta.

The show portrays Bruce Wayne as a working-class hero without the wealth and resources. This is Batman without Wayne Manor, without endless gadgets, and without a fortune to fall back on. It’s a testament to his determination and courage that he can still make a difference in a corrupt world.
In the meantime, ‘Joker: Laugh Riot’ offers one of the most bizarre DC scenarios ever. The film starts with Batman’s murder, which propels the Joker into a violent rampage to find out who murdered his biggest rival.
As his quest grows more urgent, the Clown Prince of Crime begins to wonder what he is doing in Gotham City without Batman. The creative teams behind both projects add to the excitement. Snyder will be the showrunner on ‘Absolute Batman’. Whereas, longtime DC animation writer Jim Krieg will executive produce ‘Joker: Laugh Riot’.
There’s Also A Lighter Adventure For Superman’s Best Friend

‘Krypto’ balances out the darker material with a kid-friendly series about Superman’s faithful dog. Instead of spending all his time with Superman and Supergirl, Krypto joins a gang of young criminals with ill-conceived plans that frequently go awry.

The series will be filled with plenty of humor and heart, as Krypto’s optimistic nature slowly rubs off on the misguided children of the group. Animation veteran C.H. Greenblatt will executive produce the project.
The three shows come on a super-filled DC lineup that already features ‘My Adventures with Superman’, ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’, ‘Mister Miracle’, and ‘Creature Commandos’ Season 2. The release dates and network home are still unknown, but one thing’s for certain: DC Studios is making animation a major component of its future.
