DC’s ‘Clayface’ takes its body-horror premise to a disturbing new level with an ending that suggests Matt Hagen’s powers may extend far beyond simply changing his appearance. What initially felt like a story about a man losing himself to a terrifying transformation becomes something much more unsettling by the end.

The film might’ve hinted at the possibility that Matt can exist as multiple people at the same time.

The film planted several clues that make earlier scenes look completely different in retrospect. Rather than treating Clayface’s abilities as a way to disguise himself, the ending suggests that his transformations could allow him to manipulate events through multiple identities.

And if that interpretation is correct, Caitlyn may have been dealing with a threat far closer to home than she imagined. One of the biggest clues comes when Caitlyn leaves Matt’s house. A man following her initially appears to be an ordinary threat. However, the scene takes a sinister turn when the supposed pursuer is revealed to be Matt himself.

This moment suggests that Matt may be capable of creating separate versions of himself rather than simply switching between faces. The distinction is important because it changes how audiences understand his powers. If he can maintain multiple identities simultaneously, nobody around him can know who they are actually dealing with.

An earlier scene involving Caitlyn watching Matt sleep becomes particularly suspicious in this context. The visual of Caitlyn’s body paired with Matt’s hands hints that the boundaries between their appearances may already have started breaking down. It is the detail that might seem insignificant but becomes much more disturbing once the ending enters the picture.

The final moments push this idea even further. Caitlyn moves through the streets, looking at strangers with growing uncertainty, while Matt appears disguised as a homeless man. The suggestion that Caitlyn herself could be another version of Matt makes their previous interactions even more difficult to trust.

Some conversations between the two could have actually been Matt interacting with another version of himself. The film’s clues invite that interpretation, although the precise mechanics of his ability remain open to debate. That ambiguity is what makes the ending so effective.

Clayface is already frightening because Matt can become almost anyone. His victims might never know when they are safe. The most disturbing possibility isn’t simply that Matt can steal someone’s face. It’s that he could be standing right beside them without them ever realizing it.
