Thanos has challenged some of the most powerful beings in Marvel history, but one of his most humiliating defeats came during ‘Secret Wars’. The Mad Titan thought he could take on God Emperor Doom, but he was easily defeated. Little did he know that his pride was aiding Reed Richards in his quest to defeat Doom and restore the multiverse.

Thanos was trying to prove that no one should rule existence more than him, but his battle with Doom was a distraction that ultimately killed the god he was trying to defy.

The multiverse is destroyed after the incursions in the Secret Wars storyline. Despite all this, Doctor Doom manages to save snippets of reality and assemble them into Battleworld, where he rules as God Emperor Doom.

His seemingly limitless power is the result of the ability of the Molecule Man, Owen Reece, whose reality-altering abilities Doom exploits to maintain his godlike existence. Thanos doesn’t bow down to Doom and challenges him, believing the Battleworld ruler is not worthy of his position.

In response, Doom slaughters Thanos with ease, showing just how much more powerful he was. But Reed Richards and his cohorts were already on a mission to uncover the truth behind Doom’s reign.  As Thanos’s challenge gets attention, Reed heads toward the true source of Doom’s power: Molecule Man.

The final battle was not just a battle of strength. Reed is aware that Doom’s biggest weakness is his lifelong desire to prove himself better than his intellectual rival. When Reed challenges him, Doom eventually concedes Reed could have done a better job using such power.

That’s an admission that reveals the insecurity under his god-like facade. Molecule Man subsequently withdraws Doom’s power and transfers it to Reed, allowing him to begin rebuilding the multiverse. Reed eventually works with his family to restore countless realities, while Doom returns to Latveria.

One important detail, however, is that Reed’s victory doesn’t simply end with a magical facial reconstruction. As reality is rebuilt, Doom’s face is healed, and he has the opportunity to transcend the physical trauma that has defined his identity.

In the end, Thanos’s defeat is just a small part of a much bigger story. Doom loses because Reed understands something he never could: having the power to rule the universe doesn’t mean you are the person best suited to save it.
