DC’s ‘Clayface’ Is Missing The One Character Gotham Needs

DC Studios is taking a surprisingly unusual approach to ‘Clayface’, an upcoming DCU movie centered on one of Batman’s most disturbing enemies. Although the film is set in Gotham City, early reports from someone who reportedly saw the movie suggest that Batman, Bruce Wayne, and even the iconic Bat-Signal are nowhere to be found.

That is a strange choice for a movie about a character whose comic book history is so closely tied to the Dark Knight.

Director James Watkins has reportedly described Batman’s presence as a shadow hanging over the story, but that explanation might not satisfy fans expecting Gotham to feel like Gotham. There are understandable reasons for DC Studios to approach Batman carefully.

Matt Reeves is developing his own Batman universe with Robert Pattinson, and introducing another version of the character too quickly could create confusion among general audiences.

James Gunn has also been building the DCU gradually with ‘Superman’, ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Creature Commandos’. The latter offered a brief glimpse of Batman, but the franchise has yet to properly introduce its new live-action Dark Knight. Still, ‘Clayface’ presents an obvious opportunity to establish Batman’s influence without making him the main character.

A passing reference to Bruce Wayne or even a conversation about Gotham’s masked vigilante could help connect the film to the wider DC universe. The DCU creative did say that the film is under Batman’s shadow. So, who knows.

Batman doesn’t need to appear in every Gotham-set story, of course. However, completely avoiding references to him in a movie about one of his most recognizable enemies risks making the setting feel strangely disconnected from its comic book roots.

DC Studios Needs To Make Its Universe Feel Connected

One of the biggest challenges facing the DCU is convincing audiences that its characters inhabit the same world. Shared universes work best when individual stories acknowledge the larger world around them without relying on constant cameos. ‘Clayface’ could benefit from that balance.

The film’s reported horror-focused approach is an exciting direction for DC, and keeping Batman out of the spotlight could allow the villain’s story to stand on its own. But there is a difference between giving a character room to breathe and pretending a major part of their world doesn’t exist.

Even 2019’s ‘Joker’, which took place outside the main DC continuity, featured a young Bruce Wayne. That makes the apparent absence of any Batman reference in ‘Clayface’ all the more surprising. Ultimately, Gunn doesn’t need to rush Batman into the DCU. He simply needs to make Gotham feel like a place where Batman matters and exists.
