DC Studios isn’t ready to send ‘Lanterns‘ back into production just yet. The HBO series has created a lot of interest and revived the Green Lantern franchise, but a second season isn’t guaranteed.
The final decision will be made by the creative team to see if they can produce a sequel worthy of the original, according to DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran.
Peter Safran Explains What ‘Lanterns’ Season 2 Needs to Succeed

In an interview with Collider, Safran said fans will need to find out the fate of the show’s renewal before the end of 2026. He revealed that the studio isn’t looking to continue the series just because the first season was successful. Basically, the future of ‘Lanterns’ is in the hands of the writers.

Safran’s remarks imply that DC Studios is focused on the quality of the story, rather than an automatic renewal. It’s a hopeful indicator, although it leaves viewers hanging. Shows about superheroes have been known to lose momentum between seasons, and ‘Lanterns’ now faces the challenge of following up on a story that has already delivered major revelations.
Instead of jumping straight into another book, DC Studios seems to be allowing the writers the time to decide if there’s a real story to follow. After all, another season requires more than the same cast of characters and a larger mystery to justify itself.
‘Lanterns’ Has Put Green Lantern Back In The Spotlight

The first season of the show ended on October 4, which wrapped up the main murder mystery, introduced the second Manhunter, and set up some key connections to the larger DC Universe. There was also significant viewership of the series.

Variety reports that its seventh episode had around seven million U.S. viewers over its first three days, with previous episodes averaging over 12 million viewers in the U.S. One of Safran’s greatest triumphs has been bringing the audience back to Green Lantern.
It’s especially important because DC Studios is still developing its interconnected universe, and the future of John Stewart is linked to the upcoming ‘Superman’ sequel, ‘Man of Tomorrow’. Whether ‘Lanterns’ returns will depend on the next story the writers develop. But there’s still a chance.
