For years, ‘Game of Thrones’ had fans searching for one answer: who was the Prince That Was Promised? The old prophecy foretold of a great hero who would come to save the world from the darkness of the Long Night. But over eight seasons of theories, betrayals, and terrible battles, the show never gave the audience a simple answer.
Several characters seemed to fit the prophecy, making the mystery fascinating. Instead of pointing toward one obvious savior, the story scattered clues across generations of Targaryens, leaving fans to connect the dots themselves. Perhaps that was the point all along.
Why Rhaenyra, Daenerys, and Jon All Fit the Prophecy

The Prince That Was Promised is closely connected to Aegon the Conqueror’s dream, which warned of a devastating darkness threatening the world. This is revealed to Rhaenyra by Viserys, and it is her part to pass on the idea that the Targaryens must unite the realm against the impending threat alive.

The prophecy is passed on through her family, but she never gets to live it out herself. Centuries later, Daenerys Targaryen seems to be another strong contender. She was born on Dragonstone in a violent storm and restored dragons to the world after they were extinct for centuries.
The imagery of her rebirth appears to be specially crafted for the prophecy’s mention of salt, smoke, and dragons. Then there’s Jon Snow, who is literally ice and fire because of his parentage. He comes back from the dead, aids in the unification of competing armies to fight the Night King, and eventually becomes a pivotal figure in the fight for the survival of humanity.
It’s not hard to understand why fans have been debating for years what the true answer is. Each one fulfills a different piece of the puzzle.
Was the Prophecy Actually About Arya Stark?

It’s here that ‘Game of Thrones’ made its most controversial move. There was a lot of mythology surrounding the promised savior, but it was Arya Stark who finally killed the Night King and ended the threat to the living. Daenerys had brought her dragons to the battle, Jon had prepared for the fight, and the Targaryen history of generations had led to the darkness. But it was Arya who ended the war.

This doesn’t have to be an empty promise, however. It might imply that saving the world was never going to be the job of one single person. Each person played a role, and the outcome was won by an unexpected player. The show, however, didn’t make that very clear, leaving a frustrating amount of ambiguity.
Perhaps the most surprising thing was that ‘Game of Thrones’ wasn’t meant to provide a definitive answer. After all those years of searching for the promised prince, perhaps the real story was never about identifying one hero, but about how many people it took to save the world.
