One of the saddest parallels in ‘Game of Thrones’ is hiding in plain sight: Joffrey Baratheon and Jon Snow were living almost opposite versions of the same lie. Joffrey believed he was a legitimate Baratheon heir and grew up surrounded by the privileges of royalty, while Jon spent his childhood believing he was Ned Stark’s bastard and would never truly belong. The irony is brutal.
Joffrey had the crown without the legitimate bloodline, while Jon had the bloodline without the crown. Neither understood the truth about themselves, but their lives could not have gone in more different directions.
Joffrey Had Everything Jon Thought He Lacked
Joffrey grew up believing the Iron Throne was his by right. He had a royal name, a castle, servants, armies, and people constantly telling him how important he was. Yet his claim was built on a lie. He was secretly the son of Jaime and Cersei Lannister, making him illegitimate under Westerosi law.

That false sense of entitlement shaped almost everything about him. Joffrey desperately wanted obedience because he had been taught that his position made him superior to everyone else. His cruelty often felt like an ugly expression of insecurity: he needed people to kneel because he needed constant reassurance that he was truly a king. Jon, meanwhile, had almost none of those privileges.
Jon Had the Blood But Never Wanted the Crown
Jon was secretly the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, and later revelations established that he was born Aegon Targaryen and had a legitimate claim to the throne. Yet he spent most of his life thinking he was simply Ned Stark’s illegitimate son.

That misunderstanding shaped Jon in a completely different way. Instead of demanding recognition, he spent years searching for somewhere he could belong. He joined the Night’s Watch, found a family among his fellow brothers, and eventually became one of Westeros’ most important leaders.
And perhaps that’s the cruelest part. The person with the strongest claim never desperately wanted it, while the person with no legitimate claim built his entire identity around possessing it. Joffrey wanted everyone to believe he was born to rule. Jon spent his life believing he was born without a place.
In another life, their positions could have been completely different. But ‘Game of Thrones’ was never interested in giving its characters the lives they deserved.
