James Gunn took charge of DC Studios with an enormous responsibility: rebuild a struggling superhero franchise and give audiences a reason to get excited about its future again. However, the results have given critics plenty of ammunition, with questions emerging about the reboot’s box office performance, its transition from the old DC Extended Universe, and the clarity of its long-term plans.

Box Office Results Have Not Always Matched The Ambition

Gunn’s first major DC project, ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021), earned approximately $168 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $185 million. Its theatrical performance was affected by the pandemic and its simultaneous HBO Max release in the United States.

However, the numbers still fell short of what a major superhero film would ideally deliver. His new DCU subsequently faced another challenge: the transition itself. Meanwhile, ‘Superman’ earned around $618 million worldwide.

Although that made it a significant release for the new franchise, it did not surpass the approximately $668 million earned by 2013’s ‘Man of Steel’. Box office comparisons alone cannot determine a film’s success, but they do help explain why some observers expected a bigger commercial breakthrough.

The transition has also raised concerns about television projects and continuity. ‘Superman & Lois’ ended after four seasons. However, the series’ conclusion cannot be attributed solely to Gunn’s reboot.

Questions about the new universe’s commercial prospects have also followed its subsequent releases, while Gunn’s efforts to clarify DCU continuity through podcasts and public explanations have only prompted further debate.

Still, declaring the reboot a complete failure would be premature. Gunn’s strategy is a long-term undertaking, and individual box office results do not tell the whole story. The real test is whether DC can build a consistent identity that audiences trust.
