Jason Momoa finally had the opportunity to appear as Lobo in ‘Supergirl’, a casting dream of comic book fans for years. Whether it’s his larger-than-life persona or his style inspired by bikers, Momoa feels like he came straight out of the comic book page.

However, the film still fails to capitalize on a minor but significant moment that could’ve made his DC Universe debut even more memorable. It wasn’t huge, but something that old-time Lobo readers noticed right away.

Part of Lobo’s most recognizable trademarks in DC Comics is the term “bastich,” a uniquely Czarnian insult that has come to be synonymous with the character. It’s not just a slogan; it’s a description of the outrageous nature of Lobo’s character. It’s what sets him apart from all other antiheroes in the DC universe.

However, in ‘Supergirl’, it’s quite easy to miss, but Jason Momoa does say it. One occurs out of the way, while another occurs so quickly that it doesn’t become a memorable moment for the character. In comic book films, they tend to be good at highlighting the iconic traits of their characters.

Whether it’s a legendary costume reveal, a memorable line of dialogue, or a signature entrance, those moments frequently become fan favorites long after the credits roll. Lobo’s famous quote could’ve been one of those moments, but it’s not.

The Missed Moment Reflects A Bigger Adaptation Choice

One of the bigger critiques with ‘Supergirl‘ is the treatment of Lobo’s signature line. The movie follows many of the big events from Woman of Tomorrow. However, it doesn’t pay as much attention to some of the smaller comic elements that helped make the series so unique.

The original comic was well-balanced in color, emotion, and character touches, making its world unique. The film takes a more downbeat approach, and some of the film’s more memorable comic moments are diminished.

None of this detracts from Momoa’s performance. In fact, he is probably the type of character that the Main Man’s fans were looking for; a man of confidence, humour and chaos. His character still has plenty of potential for more adventures in James Gunn’s DC Universe.

Supergirl’ shows that Jason Momoa was the right man for the job with Lobo. It just didn’t get him one of those iconic moments that audiences would be talking about for years.
