The biggest mystery in ‘Lanterns’ has finally been blown wide open, and it completely changes how viewers should look at Zoe Macon. Episode 5 reveals that Poorna Jagannathan’s character was actually the Manhunter in disguise all along.
What makes the twist even better is that Zoe wasn’t simply pretending to be human; she had genuinely adopted human emotions and relationships, making her one of the show’s most complicated characters.
Zoe Was Never Just Pretending To Be Human In ‘Lanterns’
Jagannathan explained that she had conversations with showrunner Chris Mundy about whether Zoe’s performance should change after the Manhunter reveal. Surprisingly, the answer was no. Zoe is still human in the way she behaves because she has completely adopted the form, emotions, and experiences of the people around her.

The major difference is what’s happening underneath the surface. “The one thing that makes her drastically different is her inner machine, her inner engine to survive, which is much stronger than most people. She will survive at all costs, and to do that, she will make contracts with every person.”
Her survival instinct is much stronger than a normal person’s. Zoe doesn’t simply manipulate people because she enjoys it. She does it because survival is everything to her. That makes her treatment of John Stewart particularly chilling. Zoe could have saved John immediately, but instead she allowed him to reach the brink of death before bringing him back. It wasn’t kindness. It was a strategy.
The Manhunter Twist Makes Zoe Even More Dangerous
Zoe understands that people become easier to control when they’re desperate. By saving John at his lowest point, she creates a bond built on gratitude and loyalty. As Jagannathan explained, Zoe essentially makes contracts with people, giving them life in exchange for their allegiance.

“She waits for people to be in the lowest moment of their life to gain the maximum amount of loyalty.” That’s a fascinating approach for a Manhunter because it means her greatest weapon isn’t necessarily technology or brute force. It’s understanding human weakness.
The show also deliberately used William Macon as a decoy, with Garret Dillahunt joking that making viewers suspect him was part of his job. And honestly, it worked. The reveal lands because the series spent so much time pointing suspicion elsewhere.
With only three episodes remaining, Zoe’s true agenda could become one of the biggest threats facing Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The question now isn’t whether she’s the Manhunter. It’s what she ultimately wants from Earth, and how many people she’s willing to manipulate to get it.
‘Lanterns’ Season 2 has not officially been renewed yet, although reports indicate work has begun on a writers’ room. Meanwhile, Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart and Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner are set to return in 2027’s ‘Man of Tomorrow’, keeping the Green Lantern mythology firmly connected to the wider DCU.
