It’s time for the DC Universe to go on an adventure into new territory, and it might be exactly what they need. Most superhero stories are about saving the world from colorfully named villains and giant monsters.

However, ‘Lanterns’ seems to be going in a different direction. The upcoming HBO Max drama looks like a grounded mystery-thriller first and a superhero story second, which could make it one of the most unique projects in James Gunn’s DCU.

Why ‘Lanterns’ Already Feels Bigger Than A Typical Superhero Series

Lanterns’ has already sparked the kind of buzz that’s typically seen for long-running prestige dramas, and the anticipation is still growing as the show nears its premiere. Green Lanterns Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) are at the heart of the show.

The series doesn’t start with the pair embarking on a galaxy-spanning adventure. Instead, it plunges viewers into a rural American murder mystery. That’s just one thing that makes ‘Lanterns’ stand out from many comic book adaptations.

The show’s crime-driven premise has been likened to HBO’s successful detective dramas, and the clues, the conspiracies, and the character-driven storytelling appear to be more important than the nonstop action.

However, the Green Lantern mythology lives on, and there are already trailers out for power rings, energy constructs, and bigger threats to the cosmos.

It’s a kind of interesting mix of genres. It could be a tense investigation one moment, and some of the most visually spectacular powers in the DC Universe the next. If there are fans who have been looking for a superhero story to try something different, ‘Lanterns’ might be just that.

The Show Could Shape DCU’s Future

However, ‘Lanterns’ could be much more important in the DCU’s plans than just its intriguing premise. The series has been teased with rumors that it will feature one of the Green Lantern mythology’s most dangerous beings, Parallax. Parallax would be the face of terror itself and would immediately become one of the most formidable enemies in the franchise ever.

This is a great possibility that makes the series significant. The show doesn’t have to be on the sideline; they can be a part of the bigger picture of the DCU story. There are also indications that DC is planning for more than one season and reports that other creative talent is already on board for future projects.

This shows that there is confidence in the show’s potential even if it has not been officially announced to be renewed. One thing is becoming more and more apparent, though, and that’s that ‘Lanterns‘ is not a superhero show like any other, at least not yet. It promises to be one of the most ambitious and influential projects in the history of the DCU.
