“I Don’t Know How He Lost His Powers”: Tom Welling Reflects On Clark Kent’s Controversial Fate In Arrowverse’s ‘Crisis On Infinite Earths’

Smallville‘ star Tom Welling reprised his role as Clark Kent in the Arrowverse crossover event ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths‘. In his cameo, fans saw that this version of Clark had given up his powers after marrying Lois Lane and raising a family. This came as a surprise to many longtime ‘Smallville‘ viewers who had followed Clark’s journey to become Superman. Recently, Welling opened up about playing Clark again in Crisis and his thoughts on the character’s power change.

Welling addressed fan reactions to the reveal at a convention. He said, “I understand some fans were surprised or disappointed that Clark didn’t have his powers anymore. Smallville followed Clark’s story over a decade so it was a big change. But the multiverse allows for variations so who’s to say what exactly happened with my version of the character“. Welling seemed curious about the creative choices made for his Crisis appearance.

The Possibility Of A Variant Clark Kent

When speaking to fans, Welling suggested his Clark in Crisis may have been a variant of the one from ‘Smallville‘, meaning that he is Superman who just lost his powers. He stated, “I don’t know if that’s actually the Clark from Smallville, because it’s a multiverse, so you never know. And I don’t know how he lost his powers. No one ever told me.”

This hinted the character could have been an alternate version who had a similar backstory but ended up powerless, unlike the traditional depiction of Superman from the original show. Keeping Clark as a variant allows room for the ‘Smallville‘ continuity to remain intact.

Welling also implied there is potential for ‘Smallville‘ sequels that could address Clark regaining his powers to become Superman. He noted, “If a Smallville sequel TV show ever moves forward, they could easily explore what Clark’s life looks like now after Crisis or they could retcon the Crisis revelation“.

This suggests the actor is open to revisiting the role and a future project could explain what happened to cause Clark to resume his Superman duties. Fans would love to see the iconic character’s story continue after Welling teased that more remains to be told.
