Looking back at it now, her determined stance to work diligently for her passion to entertain audience is the best thing she has ever done. How Did Lilly Singh Came About To Be An YouTuber?
Lilly opened up about her journey to become an YouTuber in her keynote at the 2022 Teen Vogue Summit in Los Angeles. “In my heart, I wanted to [entertain]. I never thought it was realistic to do,” she said. “I thought, I’m living in Toronto. I’m a brown girl. I don’t know anyone in this [industry.] How would I ever do that? And then when YouTube came about, I was like, hmm.”
Lilly graduated with a psychology degree; while applying to graduate schools, she just realized she couldn’t commit to psychology for the rest of her life. “[I remember thinking,] I can’t even fathom doing this for two more years,” she said. “I closed my laptop. I went into my parents’ room, and I said, ‘Check this out, y’all. I want to make YouTube videos actually instead.’ And as silly as it sounds, they let me do it, and they gave me a chance, and I was scared.”
Did Her Parents Resist Her From Pursuing Her Passion?
Ofcourse, parents are going to resist any desires that’s not doctor, engineer or lawyer. “[My parents] were confused. They were like, you’re gonna do what on the what?” she started. “They did the best thing. They said, ‘You have a year. We don’t know exactly what you’re talking about. But you have a year, and if it doesn’t work out in a year, we will make you go to grad school.’”
In that year, she used that ticking clock to swiftly learn how to edit YouTube videos, write out concepts, and build an audience. Lilly said she knew this was meant to be her path in life because it was something she was willing to put her future and a promising career path on the line for. “I felt so strongly about it that I was willing to disrupt all of that,” she said.
