‘Veep’ viewership rocketed as Joe Biden submitted his withdrawal from the Presidency and Kamala Harris stood up to become a candidate. Amid the political unrest, Julia Louis-Dreyfus who played Selina Meyers in ‘Veep’, voiced her opinion on the Vice President of the USA. The actress stated that Harris is nothing like the character portrayed on screen. On 21 July 2024, Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential race.
‘Veep’ is a satirical comedy on American politics. The show began in 2012 with the cast of Julia, Timothy Simons, Tony Hale, and Sarah Sutherland. It revolves around Julia’s character, Selina, who has been elected as the Vice President of the US, much like Harris. However, in an interview, Julia revealed that her character is not similar to Harris.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus Thinks Her Character Is Like “Another Candidate”, Not Kamala Harris
Like Kamla Harris, ‘Veep’ Selina Meyers has also been elected as Vice President of the United States of America. However, Julia ends their similarities there. In an episode of ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert‘, Julia says, “Let me explain to you, on ‘Veep’ I played a narcissistic, megalomaniac sociopath, and that is not Kamala Harris.” Satires are often based on more than one person or perhaps a social behavior. Or perhaps Louis-Dreyfus’s need to be politically correct resulted in the statement.
Hence, Julia safely stated, “It might be another candidate in the race.” On the episode, Julia revealed amid the new twist in the presidential race, the viewership of ‘Veep’ has increased startlingly. Colbert revealed that the show’s viewership has increased by 350 percent. The guest replied, “It’s a great thing, I think?”

Louis-Dreyfus’s Views On Women In American Politics
‘Veep’ is a true satirical show, that deals with the harsh reality of women in the race of American politics. Julia mentioned her favorite scene on the show regarding the subject. It was a scene between Julia’s character Meyers and Matt Walsh’s Mike McLintock. She related:
“He came to me with this speech, and the speech began ‘as a woman.’ And I looked at him and I said, ‘First of all, as a woman, I’m not going to start a speech with “as a woman,” because I can’t identify as a woman,’” Louis-Dreyfus recalled. “Men hate that and women who hate women hate that, which is most women.”
Julia humorously stated that Timothy Simons’ character, Jonah Ryan reminds the actress of Donald Trump. Former US President, Donal Trump is also running for President.
