Actress Keira Knightley was only 18 when she became a global phenomenon with her performance as Elizabeth Swann in the fantasy film series ‘Pirates of the Caribbean.’

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar U.K, the English actress opened up about her experience of playing that role, stating that she felt “stuck” and “constrained” afterward in her career.

I had quite an entrance into adult life, an extreme landing because of the experience of fame at a very early age,” Knightley said. “There’s a funny place where women are meant to sit, publicly, and I never felt comfortable with that. It was a big jolt.”

In the same interview, Knightley said that her character “was the object of everybody’s lust”. Further adding, “Not that she doesn’t have a lot of fight in her. But it was interesting coming from being really tomboyish to getting projected as quite the opposite.”

She said that she “felt very constrained. I felt very stuck. So the roles afterwards were about trying to break out of that…I didn’t have a sense of how to articulate it. It very much felt like I was caged in a thing I didn’t understand.”

Around that time, to balance her choices, Keira was also doing films like ‘Pride and Prejudice‘ and ‘Atonement‘. Her role in the former also earned her a nomination for Academy Award for Best Actress.
