Ring the gongs and string the lyres, for Sophocles is about to make a world-premiere comeback. The stars of this premiere are Rami Malek and Indira Varma.
It is a sure factor that when big powerhouse parties like Malek (Oscar winner) and Verma (Olivier award winner for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’) collaborate the product is something to look forward to. And that’s exactly what’s happening.

Oedipus Rex, A Tale As Old As Theatre And Entertainment Itself
Rami and Indira are to be the main cast of ‘Oedipus Rex’ (King) in an upcoming theatre performance with the playwright Ella Hickson. ‘Oedipus Rex‘, a 5th-century BCE play is a highly revered piece of literature throughout human history. Aristotle who devised the aesthetics himself considered it as the ultimate tragedy. Samuel Taylor Coleridge stated it along with the other two titles to be the most perfect plots ever composed. Oedipus’ presence in recent pop culture references has been almost immortalized due to the psychologist Sigmund Freud.
Rami Malek is to play the role of the tragic hero Oedipus. And Indira is to be Jocasta the wife and mother of Oedipus (it’s a long story or should I say play). The play has been co-directed by Matthew Warchus and Hofesh Shechter. Matthew has stated his excitement for the play saying, “Sophocles’ play, arguably the best-plotted tale ever told, is the original detective story. 2,450 years since it was written, we still find ourselves captivated by the intractable questions at the core of its drama: of the sometimes destructive outcomes in our quest for knowledge; how much we’re in control of our fate, or if we’re mostly living out a pre-written script that we’re completely powerless to change.
He added, “I’m so excited to be co-directing this extraordinary play, in a dazzling new version by Ella Hickson, alongside the phenomenal choreographer Hofesh Shechter. And I am thrilled to announce the brilliant Rami Malek and Indira Varma in the lead roles.”

Where To Watch The Play
Confirmed by The Old Vic’s page, the play is slated to be in its own theatre hall in London. It will be released in Jan 2025. The tickets will be sold at a later date.
‘Oedipus Rex‘ has often been read and performed, and is usually celebrated. It is a tale of challenging the human’s fate, fighting, and then finally resigning to its cruel clutches. Rami and Indira will be a sight to behold for the audience.
