‘The Crown’ Season 5: Cast, Plot And Release Date

The lives of the British monarchs have always inspired artists for movies, television series, books, and even podcasts. Netflix came up with its way of telling the tale of the members of the Windsor house in the form of its superhit show ‘The Crown’.

For those who don’t know, ‘The Crown’ is a period drama that is set during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. It also explores the personal affairs of other royals like Princess Margaret, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, Princess Annie, Prince Andrew, and Edward along with Princess Diana. The show is all set to release its 5th season and here’s everything we know about it so far.

Netflix reassembles its entire cast after two seasons and the same will be happening this time as well. The plethora of talented actors that have been part of the first four seasons of the show has immensely contributed to its mounting success. The showrunners have been praised time and again for getting the casting right every season with every actor resembling the royal members not just in looks but also in mannerisms. The show’s makers have a reputation to maintain quality and certain expectations to fulfill and amid this, it becomes important the new cast follows the footsteps of their predecessors.

    Imelda Staunton As Queen Elizabeth

In the first two seasons of the show, Queen Elizabeth was portrayed by Claire Foy and Olivia Conman and now Imelda Staunton will be playing this huge role. Talking about the challenges of playing such an important role Imelda said, “I think my sort of extra challenge as if I needed it, is that I’m now doing the Queen that we’re a little more familiar with. With Claire Foy, it was almost history and now I’m playing one that people could say ‘She doesn’t do that,’ ‘She’s not like that,’ and that’s my personal bête noire.”

    Jonathan Pryce As Prince Philip

The role of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh will be played by the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor Jonathan Pryce. Matt Smith and Tobias Menzies have played the role of Queen Elizabeth’s husband in seasons 1-2 and seasons 3-4 respectively. Fans especially enjoyed the on-screen and off-screen chemistry between Claire Foy and Matt Smith and have the same expectations from the new onscreen royal couple.

    Elizabeth Debicki As Princess Diana

Princess Diana was added to the Netflix series in seasons 3 & 4 and was portrayed by Emma Corrin who was adored by fans and critics alike. Following her footsteps is Elizabeth Debicki who will be playing the ‘People’s Princess’ on screen in the upcoming season. Several actresses have played the role of Diana throughout cinematic history starting right from Catherine Oxenberg to Kristen Stewart in the recently released ‘Spencer’ and Elizabeth certainly has some big shoes to fill in.

    Dominic West As Prince Charles

Finally, Dominic West has been given the responsibility of portraying the Prince of Wales in the upcoming season. The role was earlier played by Josh O’Connor in the third and fourth seasons. Josh’s off-screen chemistry with Emma during the show’s promotional events and interviews was especially enjoyed by the fans and they might just be expecting the same from Dominic and Elizabeth.

Apart from this, Lesley Manville will be playing Princess Margaret, Claudia Harrison will play Princess Anne, James Murray will be seen as Prince Andrew and Sam Wolf is all set to play Prince Edward.

    How Will The Plot Develop?

Josh O’Connor and Emma Cronin in ‘The Crown’

The previous installments of the seasons began with Queen Elizabeth’s ascent to the British throne and followed her reign into the 80s with the introduction and departure of several supporting characters like former Prime Ministers Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher. The 5th season will focus on the royal affairs that happened during the 90s. The year 1992 was considered especially troublesome as Diana and Charles parted ways around that time and a destructive fire destroyed 115 rooms in Windsor Castle.

Diana is perhaps the favorite royal of most fans of the series and it is likely the makers will focus more on her the unraveling of her and Charles’ marriage. This means that the show might include the infamous interview Diana gave to BBC in 1995 after her divorce. It is unknown if the season will end with Diana’s death but Andrew Morton has revealed to Insider that the show’s new chapter draws influence from his biography ‘Diana: Her True Story’.
