Rowling has been receiving criticism for her transphobic views over the years. She was not included in the ‘Harry Potter‘ reunion special. However, Brian Cox has come out in her defense.

During his appearance on the BBC talk program Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, the Scottish actor talked about the country’s new law that allows transgender people to change their legal gender without a medical diagnosis.

He then talked about Rowling, stating that he doesn’t like “the way she’s been treated, actually”. “I think she’s entitled to her opinion; she’s entitled to say what she feels. As a woman, she’s very much entitled to say what she feels about her own body, and there’s nobody better to say that, as a woman.”

So, I do feel that people have been a bit high and mighty about their own attitude towards J.K. Rowling, quite frankly,” Cox continued.

Rowling’s views on transgender people haven’t been received well in Hollywood. Actors from the ‘Harry Potter’ like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint have condemned her remarks.

However, she has also received some support. Helena Bonham Carter, who portrays the role of Bellatrix Lestrange in fantasy series, has referred to the backlash Rowling received as “horrendous.”

Ralph Fiennes, who played Voldemort in the series, also criticized the verbal abuse directed at Rowling. He said he understand why people might be angry at her, but slammed the abuse saying that it “is disgusting, it’s appalling.”
