History Of Mason’s Jar
John Landis Mason was the creator of the design of the jar which is named after him. Later in 1859, Mason sold the patent rights of the jar to the Sheet Metal Screw Company of Lewis R. Boyd. The design lessened contact with food hence making the chances of the contents being less tainted.
Further in 1871, Mason and Boyd collaborated with Consolidated Fruit Jar Company. This led many glass makers to gain access to the patent of Mason’s design. This was followed by filing a patent infringement case in court. In 1859 court accepted Mason as the inventor of the jar’s structure. But the judge ruled since Mason took a prolonged time to protect his patent he lost his rights to the design patent.
Since the production of these jars was no longer protected many tried to bring improvements to the designs. One of the new variations includes adding a bead between the screw thread and the shoulder for sealing purposes. One design that became very popular was Ball Corporation’s 1913 design, ‘Perfect Jar’. In 1939, the corporation was producing 54 percent of the canning jars in the United States.
