On ‘Attack on Titan‘ the role of Ymir Fritz grew in significance as the plot developed and delves further into the Titan’s history. Her character then loses its powerful façade, revealing the turbulent life to which she was tortured. The curse started when she passed away while attempting to save the King.
The Curse of Ymir severely restricts each Titan shifter’s abilities. Titan shifters are very powerful beings, however, they aren’t unstoppable creatures who can wreak havoc for as long as they live. This is where the curse comes into play. So, what exactly is the Ymir curse? Can it be cured?

What Is The Curse Of Ymir?
Because Ymir died 13 years after gaining her power, every intelligent titan from that point on had a term of the same length. The inheritor’s health typically declines as the term comes to an end. The phenomenon of the pathways would allow a child to inherit the inheritor’s titan power if they died naturally.
Basically, 13 years after receiving their titan powers, every intelligent titan would pass away.
The curse made a lot of difference in “passing down” the 9 titans from one host to another. Eight noble families controlled the other sentient titans prior to the Great Titan War, but the Founding Titan stayed with the royal family. Families would select an inheritor from within their own ranks during this time. But after the Great Titan War, which saw all the noble families except the Tyburs annihilated, a more convoluted strategy emerged. The “Warrior Program” was this.
A significant issue was the potential loss of power in the event that the shifter passed away naturally. Seven of the nine clever titans continued to be with Marley. The Warhammer Titan was among those who were with the Tybur family. The military devised a strategy to guarantee that the titans’ power would always be in their possession of the remaining intelligent titans. The answer was to prevent the shifter from ever passing away naturally.
Can The Curse Be Cured?
Unfortunately, the answer to this is No. Not a single shifter has ever survived the 13-year curse in the history of the narrative.
The power of the titans must be destroyed in order for the curse to be broken. It can only take place, to put it simply, if Ymir decides to “die” and take the titan abilities with her. This was referenced in chapter 139 of ‘Attack On Titan’ manga. In the time skip that takes place three years after the current events, Reiner, Annie, and Pieck, who only had two years left in their term, are still alive.
This indicates that the curse is extremely potent and unaltered. Because of this, Ymir must release herself from her titanic bonds in order to remove the curse from everyone else.
