Shakira is one of the most globally well-known pop stars of all time. She is also one of the best-selling music artists of all time as well as the top-selling female Latin artist of all time.

Apart from her work, Shakira also has a unique and amazing name. Her name is a female name of Arabic origin that means “thankful, woman of grace“.

The name saw a rise in popularity thanks to the singer as several parents started naming their kids after her.

Born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, the ‘Hips Don’t Lie‘, Shakira decided to shorten her name because of convenience. The shorter version is more catchy and easy to pronounce. Several other pop stars like Beyonce, Kesha, and Ludacris have also dropped their surnames.

The 45-year-old pop star has been facing a legal battle after being charged with tax evasion. Prosecutors in Spain alleged that she failed to pay the Spanish government 14.5 million euros ($15 million) in taxes between 2012 and 2014.

She talked about it last month and explained why she rejected a settlement deal. “Because I have to fight for what I believe; because these are false accusations,” she said.

She further added, “And finally, I was advised by one of the four biggest tax specialist firms in the world, PricewaterhouseCoopers, so I was confident that I was doing things correctly and transparently from day one.”
