Johnny Depp had been caught up with his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard for a long time. The 59-year-old actor not only has exceptional acting on his list of achievements, but he also has directing experience. In 1995, alongside starring in the movie ‘The Brave,’ he also directed it. Depp is filling the director’s shoes once again as he is set to helm the biopic of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.
The trajectory of Amedeo Modigliani’s life, marked with struggles and an unfortunate end, inspired Depp to make a biopic. Al Pacino had also pushed forward for a biopic in the 1980s but to no avail. Here’s everything you might want to know about Modigliani.

Amedeo Modigliani, The Artist Who Inspired Johnny Depp Back Into Direction
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Depp will co-produce the biopic alongside Al Pacino and Barry Navidi. The inspiration for the film, Amedeo Modigliani, was an Italian painter and sculptor born to Jewish parents. He was born on July 12, 1884. An artist of the times of Picasso and Brancusi, his works did not receive the limelight they should have.
Elongated nude figures, asymmetrical compositions, and the use of simple lines dominated Modigliani’s artworks. It was Pablo Picasso who inspired the reductive nature of his compositions. One of his prominent works was in 1912, influenced by the African sculptures at the Salon d’Automne, wherein he sculpted eight elongated stone heads. In 1917, he painted a set of 30 nude figures of females. The bodies, which were characterized by their sensuality and round forms, were painted in bright and warm colors.
What made Amedeo stand out from other artists was the subjects he chose to paint. He painted common people, the ordinary folks of the Parisian community, his friends, maids, and servants.
Amedeo’s personal life, however, had layers of problems and ill fortune. The painter lived with his lover, Jeanne Hébuterne, on the Côte d’Azur with their daughter, who was born in 1918. Poverty, along with many diseases he was diagnosed with, took his life at a very young age, ending not only him but a range of beautiful art that was yet to come out of Amedeo’s hands and mind.
When Can We Expect The Film’s Release?
It was also reported that the movie will be loosely based on Dennis McIntyre’s play, ‘Modigliani,’ which premiered in 1979. The play spotlighted the crisis in which Modigliani was stuck during 1916. The play also featured artists Maurice Utrillo and Chaïm Soutine.
The casting of the movie hasn’t begun yet. However, it is sure that neither Depp nor Al Pacino will be playing Modigliani’s role since the film will focus on his life in his 30s, till his death at 35 years old. Moreover, the production will reportedly start in 2023 in Europe. So there is quite some time before the movie hits the release date.
