The melting of a glacier in the Alps has caused a slight change in the boundary between Switzerland and Italy, which has led to a disagreement about the precise site of an Italian mountain lodge.
The boundary follows a drainage split, which is the point at which meltwater will flow down either side of the mountain and into one of the countries.

Melting Glacier Changes Swiss-Italian Border
A traveler named Frederic, who is 59 years old, pushes open the constricted wooden door that leads into the restaurant of the sanctuary. The prices are listed in euros rather than Swiss francs, and the menu is written in Italian rather than German. Nevertheless, he places an order for a slice of pie and then inquires, “So — are we in Switzerland or in Italy?”
It is a topic that should be asked because it was the focus of diplomatic discussions that began in 2018 and culminated with a compromise in the previous year; yet, the specifics of the agreement are not public knowledge.
In 1984, when the refuge was constructed on a rocky outcrop, all forty of its beds and its long wooden tables were located wholly within the borders of Italy.
However, as of right now, two-thirds of the lodge, including the vast majority of the sleeping quarters and the restaurant, is situated in southern Switzerland.
The problem has been brought to light due to the fact that the region, whose economy is dependent on tourism, is situated at the peak of one of the largest ski resorts in the world, and a significant new development, which will include a cable car station, is currently under construction just a few meters away.
An agreement was hashed out in Florence in November of 2021, but the conclusion won’t be known until the Swiss government gives its approval, which won’t happen until 2023 at the earliest.
