Director James Burrows Spills The Beans About The Vegas Trip
‘Friends’ director James Burrows has written a memoir. In an excerpt, he mentions how a trip to Vegas strengthened the bond between the six cast members. “I made a reservation for just the seven of us at Spago,” Burrows writes. “I asked for the center table in the restaurant, where everyone could see us. I knew the show had a chance to really take off and told the kids, ‘This is your last shot at anonymity. Once the show airs, you guys will never be able to go anywhere without being hounded.’”
Burrows writes that none of the six actors had any money for gambling. He reveals that he was the one who lent them money. Matt Le Blanc had absolutely no idea about gambling and ended up losing all the money in a blink. “I laid out $1,400,” he writes. “If the math doesn’t seem right, it’s because [Matt] LeBlanc had no idea how to play craps and he lost his two hundred dollars in seconds, so I gave him another two hundred.”
‘Friends’ Director Says It Was Never The Same After That Night For The Cast
Burrows, in his memoir, writes that none of the members of his cast believed that they’ll be famous enough to lose their anonymity completely. But it was just as he predicted. After that bizarre night in Vegas, when the cast returned to L.A., the show premiered and became a huge hit. Apparently, that was their last night of being anything close to anonymous.
“They’ve never had a shot at anonymity since, and they each wrote me reimbursement checks for the money I gave them,” Burrows writes. “The six became real friends and would play poker in my dressing room,” he wrote of the ‘Friends‘ cast. “It was about bonding. They genuinely adored one another. A director and cast live for that kind of connection.”
