‘Captain America: Brave New World’ introduced several new faces to the Marvel Cinematic Universe while bringing back some familiar ones. Fans were excited to see iconic characters return.
This included Samuel Sterns’ return as The Leader, along with Thaddeus Ross and his daughter Betty. However, not every character made the final cut. Meanwhile, wrestler-turned-actor Seth Rollins’ role was cut when Giancarlo Esposito joined the cast. Additionally, another surprising omission was Rosa Salazar’s Diamondback.
How Giancarlo Esposito’s Casting As Sidewinder Lead Affected Diamondback’s Storyline

Rosa Salazar, best known for her roles in ‘Alita: Battle Angel‘, was reported to have joined ‘Brave New World’ in late 2023. Set photos revealed her sporting bright pink hair, a signature look for Rachel Leighton’s Diamondback in Marvel Comics.
Given her background as a highly skilled member of the Serpent Society, many assumed she would play a major role in the film’s villain lineup. Yet, when the film hit theaters, there was no sign of Salazar’s Diamondback. Director Julius Onah later confirmed that the Serpent Society’s role in the movie had shifted after Esposito was cast as Sidewinder.
It was a real shame as Diamondback has been a standout character in the comics since her debut. She’s not just another villain; she’s a trained gymnast, an expert fighter, and an elite markswoman. Over time, she even undergoes a redemption arc, breaking away from the Serpent Society before eventually joining SHIELD. However, her MCU debut is still very much possible.
Diamondback Still Has A Future In The MCU

Despite being cut from ‘Brave New World’, there’s still a chance for Diamondback to make her way into the MCU. Giancarlo Esposito himself hinted at future plans for the Serpent Society. The actor previously confirmed that his character would be further developed in a new series.

While Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce a Serpent Society project, the pieces are falling into place. ‘Brave New World’ introduced Sidewinder and Copperhead. Additionally, both characters survived the events of the film.
So, it makes sense that a future Disney+ series or movie could explore the full Serpent Society lineup. This could give fans a deep dive into the key members, including Diamondback. Moreover, her inclusion could also open the door for an intriguing dynamic with Sam Wilson.
In the comics, Rachel Leighton develops a complicated romantic relationship with Steve Rogers’ Captain America. Since the MCU hasn’t explored a love interest for Sam Wilson’s Cap yet, Diamondback could have been a fascinating choice.
