A new Marvel rumour has sparked fan speculation once again, as Dwayne Johnson is said to be the leading candidate to become the MCU’s Apocalypse

Marvel Studios has yet to make any casting decisions. Still, the news has already sparked controversy among fans, with some thrilled by Johnson’s imposing screen presence, while others wonder whether he’s the right choice to portray one of the X-Men’s most beloved villains.

Apocalypse is more than just a big bad guy. The old mutant is famous for his authoritative demeanor, his philosophical outlook, and his icy self-assurance. That complexity would need to be brought to life with a performance that would transcend charisma.

Johnson is no stranger to the superhero genre. He previously starred in DC’s Black Adam, which he spent years developing before finally making the big screen. The movie did moderately well at the box office. However, it was not well received by critics, and the future of Black Adam was never realized as DC Studios moved in a new direction.

With the speculation that he is now in talks with Marvel, fans are now wondering if he could make a comeback in a whole new comic universe. It would be a big story to transition from DC to the MCU, particularly if it means playing one of the X-Men’s biggest enemies rather than another powerful antihero.

One of the most prominent aspects of the rumour has been Johnson’s acting. Some have complained over the years that many of his roles sound alike, and that he tends to play the same part, no matter what the script calls for. There have been some critics who have said that viewers sometimes see “Dwayne Johnson” first, and the character second.

It is precisely this worry that makes Apocalypse an interesting challenge. The character isn’t just a physical menace, he’s an ancient ruler with a lot of brains, patience, and a near-religious belief in survival of the fittest. Fans feel that the character would require a complete change, physically and emotionally.

This is just a speculation, though, and it’s not official whether or not Marvel Studios is interested in Johnson. However, according to the reports, the casting might be one of the boldest moves the MCU has ever made. Whether Johnson embraces a dramatically different performance or sticks to his familiar style would likely determine how fans ultimately respond to his take on Apocalypse.
